Rough cut from “An Awakening”.
Transmute is a short film and a visual EP executive produced by multimedia artist and classically trained pianist, Angelica Olstad. The film is a visual companion piece to the 2021 EP released in the same name. Sourced from classical music, the project aims to make the arts accessible to a greater population by featuring relatable storylines about everyday people.
Still from “Death + Sourdough”.
Using field recordings from the artist’s Brooklyn apartment during the pandemic, the EP follows the four phases of New York’s lockdown. The chapters are titled, “Stateside,” “Death + Sourdough”, “An Awakening” and “Brave New World”.
Still from “Stateside”.
The short film is a collaboration between four different directors who interpreted each piece. The work begins with the artist in her home in the beginning of the pandemic. The second piece follows another woman in isolation as the city went into full lockdown. The third chapter is a departure in style as a surreal dance piece influenced by afrofuturism - a depiction of fear, grieving, and heightened black perception in the media following BLM protests and the murder of Breonna Taylor. The fourth chapter returns to the artist taking a meditative walk in nature contemplating a life beyond the pandemic.
Still from “An Awakening”.
In the aftermath of covid, the film is a call to dismantle the current systems of power. The film reminds us that there is not one collective female experience, not even one collective woman of color experience - it asks us to deepen our compassion for all women in a post-pandemic world.
Still from “Brave New World”.
Created by a bi-racial Chinese American woman, the film reminds us that there is not one collective female experience, not even one collective woman of color experience. With the pandemic serving as a unifying equalizer, the short film asks us to further deepen our awareness of intersectionality in a post-pandemic world.
